What is Aemote?
Aemote is an emotional wellbeing app built on The Change Triangle® tool for emotional health, created by Hilary Jacobs Hendel. It helps you map and understand your defence mechanisms, inhibitory emotions (like anxiety, shame, and guilt), and the core emotions underneath them (like grief, anger, and joy).
What is The Change Triangle® tool?
The Change Triangle® tool for emotional health was created by Hilary Jacobs Hendel. It has three corners, each holding a different category of emotional experience:
Defences — the patterns we use to avoid feeling (distraction, numbing, humour, intellectualising)
Inhibitory emotions — emotions that stop us from accessing our core feelings (anxiety, shame, guilt)
Core emotions — our authentic emotional experiences (grief, anger, joy, disgust, fear, excitement)
Aemote is an independent app. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Hilary Jacobs Hendel, Change Triangle LLC, or the AEDP Institute. It draws on AEDP theory, developed by Diana Fosha.
What does "Aemote" mean?
Aemote is a blend of "emote" (to express emotion) and "AEDP" (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy), the therapy tradition that informs the app. The name reflects both the act of emotional expression and the evidence-based ideas behind the tools.
Can Aemote replace therapy?
No. Aemote is a self-awareness and tracking tool, not a substitute for professional mental health care. It works best as a companion to therapy — helping you stay engaged with your emotional work between sessions. If you're working with a therapist who uses the AEDP model, Aemote can be especially valuable.
How do I know if it's working?
Progress looks different for everyone, but common signs include: spending more time in authentic emotional states, relying less on defensive responses, feeling better equipped to process inhibitory emotions like anxiety or shame, and noticing patterns in your emotional life that weren't visible before.
The Stats screen in the app tracks your check-in frequency and emotional trends over 7, 30, and 90 days — so you can see your progress over time.
Is my data secure and private?
Yes. Your data is encrypted in transit (via TLS/HTTPS) and at rest on our secure servers. We do not sell, trade, or share your personal information with third parties for advertising or marketing purposes.
You can also enable biometric lock (Face ID / Touch ID) to prevent anyone else from accessing the app on your device. You can export all your data at any time as CSV or JSON from within the app.
Is Aemote HIPAA-compliant?
No. Aemote is not a healthcare provider, health plan, or healthcare clearinghouse, and is therefore not subject to HIPAA regulations. However, we take your privacy seriously and apply strong security standards. We do not share your data with the healthcare industry without your explicit permission. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
What devices is Aemote available on?
Aemote is currently available on iOS (iPhone). Android is coming very soon.
